About Bonotol
It started with plants.
Everything else came later.
Bonotol grew from a simple love of growing things β watching a new leaf unfold, waiting for the first flower and discovering that there is always another plant worth making space for.
Our story is really quite simple.
Long before Bonotol became a website, plants were already part of everyday life for us.
A new leaf is exciting. The first flower is worth waiting for. And when a fruit tree you've looked after for months finally gives you its first fruit, it feels strangely rewarding.
Anyone who genuinely enjoys plants probably knows that feeling.
Bonotol grew from there. We wanted to build a place where people could find interesting plants, understand what they were buying and have someone to turn to when they needed a little help growing them.
Plants have never felt like ordinary products to us. They're living things β and we try to treat them that way.
What does βBonotolβ mean?
The name is inspired by the Bengali feeling of βgacher chhayaβ β the shade beneath a tree.
It's a simple image, but one we love.
A place to sit for a while. Somewhere birds can shelter. Somewhere children can play. A little patch of coolness on a hot afternoon.
Inspired by the shade beneath a tree.
Trees quietly give us so much β shade, flowers, fruit, oxygen, shelter and beauty.
That sense of life, comfort and connection with nature is what we wanted Bonotol to carry in its name.
Born in West Bengal π±
Kolkata is home, and the climate here has taught us plenty about what plants actually have to deal with.
Hot Summers
We understand what strong heat can do to balcony plants, flowering varieties and newly delivered plants.
Humidity & Monsoon
Heavy rain, humidity and drainage problems are part of gardening here, not something we only read about.
Real Indian Gardens
Balconies, terraces, rooftops, small courtyards and gardens all have different growing conditions. We keep that in mind.
Where our plants come from
Some plants are grown and maintained by us. Others come from growers, nurseries and plant markets we've come to know.
We don't want to list a variety simply because somebody has a beautiful photograph of it.
When practical, we try to understand where a plant came from, how it was grown, what condition it's in and what customers can realistically expect from it.
We especially value growers who actually know their plants and can answer questions about the varieties they're producing.
Rare & special plants get extra attention
Unusual fruit plants, rare cultivars and special varieties often need a little more investigation.
Where possible, we look at the mother plant or mother tree, leaves, fruits and growth habit, and speak directly with the grower about how the plant was propagated.
That might mean grafting, air layering, cutting or seed, depending on the plant.
Nature still gets the final say. Flower colour, fruiting, growth rate and plant appearance can change with climate, age, nutrition, soil and growing conditions.
We'd rather explain that clearly than make a promise a living plant may not be able to keep.
One more look before the journey begins.
A live plant needs a little more attention than an ordinary item coming off a warehouse shelf.
- Leaves and overall appearance
- Stem and branch condition
- Moisture level
- Approximate plant size
- Grow bag or container condition
- Root and soil condition where practical
- Suitability for transportation
- Plant matched against the order
A cardboard box isn't a plant's natural habitat. π¦πΏ
Sending a living plant hundreds β sometimes thousands β of kilometres is never quite the same as shipping a normal product.
Depending on the plant, we may secure the growing medium, protect the pot or grow bag, support stems and position the plant carefully to reduce unnecessary movement in transit.
We keep improving this process as we learn from actual deliveries and customer feedback.
A little travel stress can happen
A healthy plant may occasionally arrive with a dropped leaf, a bent branch or look slightly tired after travelling.
That doesn't automatically mean something is wrong with it.
Plants often need a little time, suitable light, ventilation and proper watering before they settle into their new home.
The courier may say βDelivered.β We don't have to disappear.
Sometimes the first few days with a new plant bring more questions than expected. That's completely normal.
Need help with your new plant?
Reach out if you're unsure about what to do next. Depending on the situation, we can provide general guidance on:
- Unboxing
- Initial watering
- Sunlight
- Repotting
- Transport stress
- Acclimatisation
- General plant care
- Getting started after delivery
Talk to Bonotol
Plants first. Technology where it helps.
Bonotol also has strong roots in technology, web development and software.
We use technology behind the scenes to make running Bonotol better β from organising plant information and improving order handling to customer support, content, automation and newer AI-based tools.
But we don't want technology to become the story.
If it makes finding a plant easier, provides better information or helps us support a customer more quickly, it's useful.
The plants are still the reason Bonotol exists.
Technology helps us run the nursery better. It doesn't replace the hands that grow, check, pack and care for the plants.
We don't need to be the biggest nursery.
We'd much rather build Bonotol into a plant business people feel comfortable coming back to.
Welcome to Bonotol.
Maybe you're buying your very first plant. Maybe your balcony is already full and you're trying to work out where the next one will fit.
You may be building a terrace garden, collecting orchids, growing fruit trees or searching for one particular rare plant you've wanted for years.
However you found us, we're glad you're here.
We hope the plant that arrives from Bonotol becomes one you enjoy watching grow for a very long time.
Bonotol β inspired by the shade beneath a tree.
